Catarina Vasconcelos - in conversation with Parker Burrows and Fien Limburg
Film Club is proud to present another special event – on the 8th of May, Portuguese filmmaker Catarina Vasconcelos will join us for a Q&A with Parker Burrows and Fien Limburg. Taking inspiration from her background in fine arts, Vasconcelos’ poetic and self-reflexive work often merges archive and abstract imagery to connect the personal and political, dealing with issues of intergenerational trauma, identity and memory.
The discussion will be accompanied by a screening of Vasconcelos’ latest short film, Nocturne for a Forest (2023): In the 15th century, in Portugal, a group of monks built a wall around a forest and prevented the entry of women. But the hands of the living cannot control everything: in the invisible world, where night reigns and only souls light up the forest, women have built their kingdom of invisibility, without walls.
We have limited spots for this event, so be sure to sign up in advance through this link!
Also, we will be screening Vasconcelos’ debut feature to prepare for this event! Read below for details…

The Metamorphosis of Birds
Catarina Vasconcelos, 2020 - with an introduction by Parker Burrows
To prepare for the arrival of the Portuguese filmmaker Catarina Vasconcelos and her new short film, we will be screening her debut feature, The Metamorphosis of Birds. In an essayistic form that rests somewhere in between fiction and documentary, Vasconcelos recounts stories of her late mother and grandmother - sometimes through her own eyes, and sometimes through her father’s. Vasconcelos’ background in fine arts is apparent in the cinematography, which captures luscious nature and intimate domestic scenes with the careful deliberation of classical still lifes. Through gorgeously poetic voiceover, Vasconcelos blurs many lines - between analog and digital archives, between grief and optimism, between dreams and memories. A treasure of contemporary documentary filmmaking.
